The redevelopment of Hewanorra International Airport is continuing, with the most important projects now moving forward as part of the airport’s long- needed modernisation.
The status of the works was reviewed during a recent site visit by Minister for Infrastructure, Ports Services and Energy, Shawn Edward, and senior officials of the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA).
Construction has resumed on the new Air Traffic Control Tower, which was a major component of the redevelopment aimed at improving safety and air navigation. The tower is being built by NH International (Caribbean) Ltd. in joint venture with Aeronav Inc.
Officials also reviewed several operational areas, including the crash fire hall, the air cargo facility, the meteorological services department, the terminal building, and the wider redevelopment site.
SLASPA noted that the airport upgrade, supported by the Caribbean Regional Air Transport Connectivity Project – Saint Lucia, focuses on runway rehabilitation and is funded by the World Bank.
Edward said the redevelopment of Hewanorra International Airport remains a priority national project and is key to improving efficiency, safety, and overall airport operations.
The project is expected to strengthen Saint Lucia’s connectivity and position Hewanorra International Airport as a modern gateway for regional and international travel
