Home Affairs launches upgraded booking system to combat fraud

The Department of Home Affairs has launched an upgraded online booking system on its MyHomeAffairsOnline platform, introducing enhanced security measures.

The new security measures are aimed at preventing the abuse of appointment slots and improving public access to services.

HOME AFFAIRS UPGRADES ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM

Under the new system, users are required to create a MyHomeAffairsOnline profile linked to their South African ID number and email address before making a booking. The department said this will help ensure that appointments remain available to legitimate clients and reduce opportunities for abuse.

According to Home Affairs, the upgrade follows years of exploitation of the previous booking platform by syndicates and other unscrupulous individuals who took advantage of vulnerabilities in the system to block appointment slots and resell them to desperate citizens.

The department said the practice made it difficult for many South Africans to secure appointments for essential services such as identity documents, passports and other civic services.

The upgraded booking system is available through the MyHomeAffairsOnline platform and forms part of the department’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at improving service delivery, combating fraud and modernising access to government services.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, said ordinary South Africans had for too long been disadvantaged by criminals who exploited weaknesses in the previous booking system to profit from appointment slots.

“The migration of our booking system to MyHomeAffairsOnline directly addresses this abuse by linking bookings to verified user profiles, strengthening the integrity of the system and protecting citizens’ access to services.

“This reform advances our vision of Home Affairs @ Home by making services more secure and convenient for citizens,” Schreiber said.

The latest upgrade is part of ongoing efforts by the department to digitise services and reduce opportunities for corruption while improving efficiency and accessibility for South Africans seeking Home Affairs services.

DEPARTMENT TARGETS GHOST EMPLOYEES

Earlier this month, the Department of Home Affairs announced that it has developed a new online real-time employee verification portal for National Treasury as part of government’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at strengthening public sector accountability and protecting public funds.

The Department of Home Affairs said the initiative forms part of government’s ongoing efforts to eliminate ghost employees and curb payment irregularities that reportedly cost the national fiscus an estimated R3.9 billion in 2025.
