How Ayub Khalifa engineered Kawempe Muslim’s sixth league title

In a nerve-wracking finale to the 2025/26 Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League season, Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC clinched the championship on the final day, cementing their position at the pinnacle of Uganda’s rapidly growing women’s football landscape.

Finishing a gruelling campaign with 52 points just edging out relentless rivals She Corporate FC, the victory further solidified the legendary status of head coach Ayub Khalifa.

The triumph marks Khalifa’s sixth title in a storied coaching career that began with his very first league success back in 2015.

Navigating the tightest title race

Reflecting on the monumental achievement, an ecstatic yet grounded Khalifa emphasized that this particular championship required an extra layer of grit.

“Every title is special, but this one means a lot because it came after a very competitive season,” Khalifa said. “The players showed great character and determination until the end. I thank them and I thank Allah for the victory.”

The 2025/26 campaign was widely regarded as one of the tightest in league history, with the trophy destination undecided until the final whistle.

Khalifa attributed their ultimate success to how his squad handled high-stakes situations across a highly competitive field.

“You saw teams like Makerere University WFC competing strongly, Uganda Martyrs pushing She Corporate FC, and Kampala Queens challenging Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC,” Khalifa explained.

“That competitiveness gave me the belief that results could go either way on any matchday. In the end, the pressure moments defined the season.”

The tactical catalyst

A defining factor in Kawempe’s championship run was their ability to secure a crucial league double over their closest title rivals, She Corporate FC.

Khalifa highlighted those head-to-head clashes as the ultimate catalyst for their triumph, noting that the matches provided vital momentum and a decisive head-to-head advantage.

Beyond tactical execution, Khalifa expressed immense pride in his team’s lethal attacking prowess and intangible qualities. Kawempe finished the year as the league’s most clinical side, scoring 43 goals.

“What pleased me most was the discipline, unity, and fighting spirit,” the tactician noted. “Even in difficult moments, the players continued to believe in themselves. We also played good football and ended the season as the highest-scoring team, which shows our consistency and attacking intent.”

A shared ecosystem of success

Maintaining momentum was a strategic blueprint mapped out from day one. After leading the pack at the mid-season break, Khalifa’s team executed the plan flawlessly to sustain the challenge until the final matchday.

However, the coach was quick to share the credit with the school’s leadership and the club’s unwavering fan base.

“I always believe football is a team effort,” he reflected. “The school management is our biggest supporter and provides everything needed. The fans also played a huge role, travelling long distances, including to Soroti. That support meant a lot throughout the season.”

With domestic glory secured, Khalifa’s gaze has already shifted toward the continent. As Ugandan champions, Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC will fly the national flag at the upcoming CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers.
