On Saturday, Peckham Town played their penultimate game of the season at Parkwood Rangers, located in the hinterland between Bexley and Crayford.
The club play on a plastic pitch with a weird and unique feature (more about that later).

It’s not the easiest ground to get to: we elected to get the Victoria line to Vauxhall, and then the overground to Waterloo East and on to Bexley. The ground is then about a 25 minute walk away.

Waiting for the train at Waterloo East, with The Shard dominating the horizon (click here to see views from the top of that building).

Bexley is quite a pretty village, and we passed the Village Hotel on our way to the ground.
The Grade II listed building is a fine example of late 17th century domestic architecture and has been converted into a small 14 bed hotel.

Built during the Victorian era in 1894, the Freemantle Hall serves as a community centre and focal point within the village.

St. Mary the Virgin Church, Bexley.

Arriving at the ground from the left, we were forced to walk all away around this long stretch of path with pointless high fencing.

And here’s what’s weird – and utterly crap – about this ground.
A wire suspended about 3m in the air stretches right across the halfway line, resulting in loads of balls hitting the thing and disrupting play.
It happened multiple times throughout the game and ruined several promising Peckham moves. How the hell can this be permitted?

Back to the football, Peckham arrived with a nano-thin hope of being promoted, which relied on every other team near the top catastrophically collapsing, while Parkwood needed a point to save them from relegation.
The hosts promptly scored in the first few minutes, leaving Peckham to chase the game.

Two cricket games were taking place adjacent to the football pitch, with occasional shouts of “Howzat!” punctuating the afternoon.
They were fortunate enough to be playing on real grass rather than on a shimmering sea of plastic.

Peckham levelled the score via a well taken penalty kick.

Players plus high level garrotting wire.

Just like at the fixture at Peckham recently, the mood changing goalie was back in full expressive form.
At times it was like watching a solo Shakespearian monologue on fast forward, as the goalie articulated an ever-shifting array of emotions, from friendly to angry and antagonistic, from chatty to silent, and then pumped up to totally and utterly deflated.

Parkwood went ahead in the second half.

One of the Parkwood players was sin-binned for a full-on emo outburst, culminating in him throwing his boot in the air.
The ref wasn’t impressed.

Peckham bagged the equaliser to make it 2-2.

“When sorrows come, they come not single spies, but in battalions.”

The pitch was festooned with the modern equivalent of Nazca lines.

As the clock wound down, Peckham went all out for the winner without success.

The attendance was a modest 45, a large chunk of whom were travelling Peckham fans.

Full time: 2-2.
Peckham’s final game of the season is away to Ide Hill on the 9th May 2026.
