International News: Guatemala tightens Ebola screening at La Aurora International Airport

By Zoila Palma:  Guatemala has strengthened health screening measures at La Aurora International Airport following an international Ebola alert issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Guatemalan Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) announced on June 17, 2026 that enhanced surveillance protocols are now in place to detect and respond to potential health risks at the country’s main international gateway.

The new measures were agreed upon during an inter-agency coordination meeting involving airport operational and administrative officials. Authorities reviewed existing health protocols and introduced additional strategies aimed at improving the early detection of possible Ebola cases while ensuring compliance with international biosafety standards, Reuters report.

As part of the enhanced response, medical personnel will closely monitor passengers using six thermal imaging cameras installed throughout the airport’s entry areas. Travelers registering temperatures above 37°C (98.6°F) will be interviewed and undergo medical evaluations to determine whether they pose any health risk.

Airport staff have also been instructed to follow isolation and clinical assessment procedures if passengers display suspicious symptoms.

In addition to increased health screening, La Aurora International Airport has stepped up cleaning and disinfection of high-contact areas, including handrails, counters, restrooms, and waiting areas.

Authorities say the strengthened measures are intended to protect passengers, airport workers, and visitors while maintaining safe operations in line with WHO recommendations.
