Saint Lucian Johnson Charles is among the 15-man squad selected for the upcoming ICC T20 Men’s Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be played in India and Sri Lanka in February. The team, led by Barbadian skipper Shai Hope, will seek to break a ten-year ICC tournament drought, having last held the title of T20 World Cup champions in 2016. It should be noted that this squad was selected before the West Indies’ recent series defeat to Afghanistan, as per ICC requirements, but has only now been announced.
The squad boasts explosive batting depth, with Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, and Charles all included. Spin strength comes through the inclusion of left-arm spinners Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie, complemented by the handy off-spin of Roston Chase. The pace attack is spearheaded by Shamar Joseph, with Jayden Seales, Jason Holder, and Romario Shepherd adding to the arsenal.
The team also features newcomer Quentin Sampson, who brings fresh energy after his Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League success. The Guyanese sensation was named the most outstanding emerging player in last year’s tournament.
