Kavango West Cattle Ranch has lined up farm development projects worth about N$5.8 million for the 2026/27 financial year, with spending focused on breeding stock, fodder production, water infrastructure and fire protection.
Cattle ranch manager Walter Sirongo outlined the plans during an interview with Nampa on Tuesday, saying the main goal is to strengthen the herd and increase output to the market.
“We want to improve the breeding stock and also increase the throughput from 1 500 to 3 000 head of cattle per annum. This is in addition to the scale-up plan of 1 000 cattle per month,” he told delegates.
He added that the farm’s herd is projected to rise from 6 300 to at least 8 000 head, excluding Mangetti West.
A major share of the planned spending is directed at the animals themselves. About N$2.5 million is earmarked for the procurement of 50 breeding bulls and N$1.8 million for the procurement of 100 breeding heifers in order to improve the genetic quality of the herd.
To secure feed, the ranch plans to expand land under fodder production from the current 32 hectares to at least 500 hectares, with a budget of N$1 million for this work.
“This is what we have planned to do to prepare the farm against any natural disaster,” Sirongo said.
Fire risk is another priority, with N$500 000 set aside for the maintenance of firebreaks to protect grazing areas against veld fires.
On infrastructure, an 80 cubic metre water tower, carried over from the previous financial year at a cost of about N$2 million, is already under construction.
The ranch also plans to expand its quarantining facility, known as the paradigm camp, by an additional 1 000 hectares to allow more cattle to be prepared before being sent to the central abattoir.
Sirongo said the farm wants to build exclusion camps and electrify elephant exclusion zones to prevent production stock from mixing with wildlife, and to provide dedicated water points for elephants to reduce fence damage and other disruptions.
“We must also consider the wildlife that’s around the farm or within the farm and as such we are exploring wildlife tourism as well,” he said.
