*Long before children are old enough to fully understand social media, many are already absorbing one of its harshest lessons: that how they look matters more than who they are.

That growing pressure is at the center of “Perfectly Perfect,” a new children’s book by physician, author, and radio personality Dr. Tiffanie Tate. Written for kids under 12, the book aims to open early conversations about self-worth, body image, and the emotional damage that can come from comparison culture.

Tate, a retired OB/GYN originally from Compton, California, frames the issue as more than a parenting concern. In her view, it is a wider health and cultural problem.

“The ‘perfect trap’ is a public health issue,” Tate said in materials announcing the book. “Too many children seem to be suffering from image issues from social media. It’s time for us to rewrite self-worth in this age of pressure, comparison, and mental health crises.”

In “Perfectly Perfect,” via Christian Faith Publishing, a young girl begins struggling with how she sees herself and stops eating. Her friends step in with compassion, reminding her that her worth was never tied to appearance in the first place. The story uses simple language and friendship-centered storytelling to introduce children to difficult topics in a way families can discuss together.

Why the Message Matters Now

The timing of the book speaks to a broader concern many parents, educators and health professionals have been raising for years: children are feeling the effects of comparison younger and younger.

Even before they are active on social platforms themselves, kids are often surrounded by filtered images, beauty standards and messages that suggest value must be earned through appearance, popularity or approval. That pressure can quietly shape how they eat, how they relate to friends and how they think about themselves.

Tate’s message pushes in the opposite direction. The book’s central idea is that self-worth is not something a child has to achieve.

“At any age, a child can learn and appreciate their own self-worth because they are perfectly perfect from birth,” Tate said.

A Conversation Starter for Families

More than a picture book, “Perfectly Perfect” is being positioned as a conversation starter for parents, caregivers and educators who want age-appropriate ways to talk about confidence, empathy, self-image and disordered eating.

That practical angle may be part of what sets the book apart. Rather than waiting until a child is in crisis, the story encourages adults to begin affirming self-worth early — before social pressure hardens into self-doubt.

Tate’s latest title continues a pattern in her work. Her previous children’s books have tackled other difficult but necessary subjects, including personal safety, bullying and financial literacy.

With “Perfectly Perfect,” she turns to a problem many adults are still struggling to name clearly themselves: how to help children resist a culture that too often confuses image with identity.

At a time when so many young people are learning to measure themselves against unrealistic standards, Tate’s message is simple, direct and timely: children do not have to earn their value. They already have it.
