Midrand SPCA Inspectors Taking Animal Welfare Lessons Into Classrooms

Just weeks after the Johannesburg SPCA highlighted the demanding work inspectors do daily, Midrand SPCA inspectors were out in schools helping educate young learners about animal welfare.

Johannesburg, South Africa (14 May 2026) – Just a few weeks after the Johannesburg SPCA highlighted the demanding work its inspectors do every day, the organisation is once again shining a light on the people working on the frontline of animal welfare.

While many people associate SPCA inspectors with rescue operations and cruelty investigations, their work also stretches into schools and communities, where they help teach younger generations about kindness, compassion and responsible pet care.

As part of those ongoing efforts, Midrand SPCA inspectors recently visited Nehemiah Primary School for an animal welfare education session with learners.

The talk focused on treating animals with respect, understanding responsible pet ownership and helping children understand the role compassion plays in both animal and community well-being.

The visit was organised with the assistance of Melanie Browne from Lions Clubs International, helping create an opportunity for learners to engage directly with SPCA inspectors and ask questions about animal welfare.

Representing the organisation during the session were Inspector Theo Mokgatle and Inspector Richman Sibande, who spent time interacting with learners and sharing practical lessons around caring for animals.

Because while inspectors are often the first people responding to difficult cases involving neglect or abuse, they are also working to prevent those situations before they happen by encouraging awareness and compassion from a young age.

The organisation says school visits and community outreach programmes remain an important tool in helping build safer and kinder environments for animals.
