President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to convene a high-stakes caucus of the ruling National Resistance Movement, with the escalating corruption investigation against First Vice National Chairperson (female) Anita Annet Among expected to take centre stage.
The meeting is scheduled for Sunday at State House Entebbe and will follow a sitting of the party’s Central Executive Committee earlier the same day, setting the stage for what insiders describe as a decisive moment within the NRM.
Top on the agenda will be the endorsement of party flag bearers for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament in the 12th Parliament, amid growing political realignments triggered by the ongoing investigations.
Sources indicate that West Budama South MP and Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth-Oboth, is being fronted for the position of Speaker, positioning him as a key contender in a race that has been dramatically reshaped in recent days.
For the position of Deputy Speaker, President Museveni is reported to have endorsed Thomas Tayebwa, signalling continuity within the party’s parliamentary leadership despite the turbulence.
The endorsement was publicly reinforced by Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who said the decision followed guidance from the Commander-in-Chief.
“On the issue of Deputy Speaker, after getting guidance from the Commander-in-Chief, all Patriotic League of Uganda MPs and PLU-leaning MPs will support Thomas Tayebwa for that position. Congratulations,” Muhoozi said.
Beyond leadership endorsements, the caucus is also expected to directly address the deepening investigation into Among, whose political standing has come under intense pressure following a series of high-profile security operations targeting her homes and offices.
Her recent withdrawal from the Speaker race has further heightened speculation within political circles, with many interpreting it as a strategic move in response to mounting scrutiny.
Insiders say Museveni is likely to use the caucus meeting to set the tone for how the ruling party navigates the unfolding crisis, balancing internal cohesion with the broader implications of the investigation.
The convergence of party politics and an active anti-corruption probe places the NRM at a critical juncture, with decisions taken at Sunday’s meeting expected to shape both the leadership of Parliament and the party’s internal dynamics in the weeks ahead.
