Nine Yards is redefining the Joburg lifestyle precinct with gardens, live art, charity partnerships and community-driven experiences.
Johannesburg, South Africa (26 May 2026) – Joburg’s cultural hotspots are growing, and Nine Yards is joining the scene of must-visit locations. While the venue hosts a selection of curated businesses, food and drinks spots and the odd hidden gem, it’s the good things happening beyond the new venue that we got excited about!
We were recently invited to visit the precinct to learn about all the good things happening in the heart of Rosebank.
On the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Chester Road, you will find Nine Yards, Johannesburg’s new green town square. The Precinct, which expands the historic site long associated with one of Joburg’s best-known nurseries, now encompasses nine surrounding properties which have been thoughtfully reimagined into a contemporary mixed-use destination. Rather than offering more of the same, Nine Yards has introduced a new kind of city experience.
“Nine Yards is built around a simple but powerful idea: Johannesburg deserves places that feel human, hopeful and full of possibility,” says Timothy Sammons, CEO of Cadastral Capital. “The response so far has shown how much people value thoughtful spaces where they can gather, connect and enjoy the city differently.”
Support for the arts and charity is woven into the fabric of the new precinct. The Amphitheatre, also known as the green heart of the venue, is the perfect outdoor spot for all the charitable fun days, and already, it has been busy!
The Smile Foundation has found a space at Nine Yards, blending wishes and live-art activations into their fundraising efforts. The organisation recently hosted a live painting event by renowned South African artists Melissa Haiden and Alpheus Ngoepe, who painted pieces to be included in the upcoming Colours of Compassion charity art auction.
Guests who had the pleasure of attending Nine Yards had the opportunity to engage with the artists, experience the creative process live, and learn about the upcoming auction.
Woodrock Animal Welfare have been hosted at the venue for pop-up (or should we say pup-up?) adoption days, where they bring a host of adorably adoptable pups into the public setting, hoping to meet the person who falls in love and adopts them.
If you are eager to meet a pup while strolling through the precinct, the team share their “pup-ups” on socials.
I have to say, my favourite element is the garden, so I was drawn to the offerings in the Gardenshop nursery and the adjoining shop, Garden Fresh, which supports the gardens of Afrika Tikkun. Yes, as you walk through the beautifully curated grocery store, the heirloom tomatoes and delicious greens just about jump into your basket.
The Green Acres Hydro-Coop programme, based at Afrika Tikkun’s Green Acres Farm in Diepsloot, has brought together a group of 20 young trailblazers, including 19 women and one young man living with a disability, to build revenue-generating farming enterprises. Afrika Tikkun has partnered with Garden Fresh at Nine Yards to create real market access for the produce being grown.
So while many may be visiting for the trendy, Insta-worthy hotspots, they are staying for all the good things happening.
There is so much more good to come from this new and trending venue. We look forward to seeing how the space grows and includes more charities in future. Stay tuned!
