An old doggie, learning what happiness really is.
St Francis Bay, South Africa (08 May 2026) – Ouma is an adorable ten-year-old rescue doggie who has just discovered the simple joy of a new toy. This video says it all!
Ouma wasn’t always this happy; she’s had a difficult life.
She was rescued by St Francis Animal Rescue in March, removed from a lifetime of neglect. When volunteers found her, she had burn scars on her body and large lumps of dried tar stuck in her coat, skin, and paw pads. She had spent her entire life outdoors with an owner who didn’t care.
When her rescuers stepped in, she was anxious and scared, but as gentle as can be.

“Ouma has allowed our Volunteers to work on her with not even a whimper, only gratitude, faith and trust that we would do her no harm.”
As they nursed Ouma back into shape, their greatest hope was to find her a loving, comfortable home before her life of suffering came to an end. Not long after, a long-time rescue supporter of the organisation, Heidi Penfold, offered to foster her.
“It’s never easy creating a loving home for a highly anxious dog who has spent her entire life with an uncaring owner, living outdoors in all weather. It is highly stressful for these dogs to settle indoors until they learn to trust and their fear dissipates.” Ouma’s rescuers shared.
It wasn’t easy at first because she had never been touched with kindness, but slowly, Ouma began to come around. After some time with her foster family, Heidi shared a happy update.

“She doesn’t flinch anymore when I reach out to stroke her and enjoys being touched. She even doses off for a while. She now takes a treat or biscuits from my hand and is starting to show trust. She doesn’t panic at night when she’s inside which makes me happy. She snuggles in her bed until the morning. Not a peep. Such a precious little soul.”
Just over a week later, the Penfold family had fallen in love, and Ouma had settled in well. They were ready to give Ouma the retirement she deserved.
Ouma has been with her new family for a few weeks now. She’s landed with her bum in the butter.
“This old girl has had the chance to snuggle in thick grass for the first time, to enjoy delicious bowls of home cooked soft food and to sleep deeply for hours on a cosy bed in the comfort of a happy, quiet, peaceful home.”
Plus, she’s just discovered the joy of a toy. After a lifetime of suffering, it’s her happy ending.
