Parliament is set to approve the reappointment of Jessica Alupo as Vice President and Robinah Nabbanja as Prime Minister.
The two leaders were on Tuesday reappointed by President Yoweri Museveni to their respective positions after serving for the past five years.
“By virtue of the powers given to the President of Uganda under Articles 108(1) and (2), 108A(1), 111(1), 113(1), and 114(1) of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, the following persons have been proposed for appointment as Vice President, Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State, and Senior Presidential Advisors,” Museveni said.
According to the newly released cabinet list, Museveni dropped more than 22 ministers, including Matia Kasaija and Deputy Prime Minister Moses Ali.
Parliament is expected to move a motion seeking approval of Alupo’s appointment later today. Article 108(2) of the Constitution provides that the President shall appoint a Vice President, subject to approval by a simple majority in Parliament.
Similarly, lawmakers will consider a motion to approve Nabbanja’s appointment as Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business. Article 108A(1) of the Constitution stipulates that the Prime Minister must be appointed by the President and approved by Parliament, and must either be a Member of Parliament or qualified to be elected as one.
The approvals are expected to pass smoothly, given the ruling party’s numerical strength in Parliament.
