Austin's Julie Nolen is used to building things herself. Hailing from West Texas, Nolen has cultivated a rough-and-tumble country sound, showcased in her 2016 album Songs of Dignity and Grit. Both of these ingredients are needed to keep OUTlaw Pride going — what started as a talent acquisition and production group for queer artists in Austin has grown into a regional queer country festival and, now, a record label.
For Nolen, now is the right time to create this opportunity. While the Texas queer country community is "few and far between," she notes, it's also "alive and kicking hard!" Nolen has proven that with appearances at AmericanaFest and SXSW, where she has curated OUTlaw Pride events for both major festivals. For Nolen, the label is intended to strengthen the current queer country community — and to demonstrate its strength to everyone else.
