Danielle Mills Walden is a true champion whose grit, endurance, and steadiness has set her apart. From her days as a young girl chasing her dreams, earning a state ranking, and being crowned #1 in her region for tennis to become a professional tennis player – she continues to level the playing fields in any room you place her in – be it best selling author, top athlete, or embodying what it means to be a successful businesswoman.

The author of Amazon’s 2022 best-seller “How to Master LinkedIn,” Walden Mills returns this spring with a powerful memoir titled “Scratching The Surface” taking readers behind-the-scenes for a look at what it was like to attend the legendary IMG Sports Academy and how that experience shaped her as a tennis pro, and later, a business professional.

The multi-hypenate athlete, author, and businesswoman sat down with SHEEN Magazine to discuss the inspiration behind her latest book, what producing results really mean, and why you should never settle for mediocrity. Her only hope is that any person who reads this book will be impacted with the type of inspiration that motivates them to be their best and reach their potential.

What inspired you to write Scratching The Surface?

I wrote this book because I hit a moment in my life where everything, I thought defined me, abruptly stopped. Tennis had been my identity for so long, and when that shifted, I was left asking a deeper question: who am I without it? Scratching the Surface came from that place. It’s not just about my story, it’s about what happens when high performers have to rebuild themselves from the inside out. I wanted to give language to something so many people experience but don’t always talk about.

You wrote that at the academy a student’s skill level was based on results. Do you hold this as a personal belief?

That was the environment: results were everything. But as I’ve grown, I’ve learned that results are a reflection, not a definition. Skill and discipline create results, but they don’t tell the full story of who you are. When we tie our worth only to outcomes, that’s where the Identity Trap begins. Real growth comes from understanding the process behind the result, not just the result itself.

What does “never settle for mediocrity” mean, especially for Gen Z?

To me, it means not shrinking yourself to fit what’s comfortable or expected. It’s about growth, not perfection. For Gen Z especially, you’re still figuring things out, and that’s okay. Being the best version of yourself doesn’t mean having all the answers. It means staying committed to evolving, learning, and being honest about who you are in each season.

Mills Walden’s inspiring memoir is a testament to readers that even though you may not have been born with a super-resilient mind or the mindset of a champion, by putting in the time, the effort, and the practice you can achieve just about anything you want in life.
