Morial issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision on Louisiana v Callais: “Today’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais is a profound setback for American democracy and a direct blow to the voting power of Black communities in Louisiana and across the nation. “At its core, this case was never about fairness or constitutional principle—it was about whether a multiracial democracy will be permitted to function as intended, or whether the voices of Black voters can once again be weakened, diluted, and silenced. By undermining lawful efforts to ensure fair representation, the Court has placed long‑standing protections of the Voting Rights Act in grave jeopardy. “For generations, Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act has served as a critical safeguard against discrimination in our electoral system. It exists because of an undeniable history of exclusion. Striking or weakening these protections does not advance equality—it erodes it. “The consequences of this ruling reach far beyond Louisiana. It threatens to invite a new wave of discriminatory redistricting across the country and to roll back decades of hard‑fought progress that brought us closer to a democracy where every voice matters equally. “Fair and equitable political representation has never been willingly granted—it has always been fought for and protected by the will of the people. While today’s decision is deeply disappointing, it will not deter our resolve. The National Urban League will continue to stand with communities, advocates, and partners nationwide to defend the fundamental right to vote and to ensure that our democracy serves all Americans, not just a powerful few.”
