At least seven passengers have been confirmed dead following a road crash involving a Nile Star Coach and a Benz Actros trailer in Nwoya district, Daily Star has learned.
The crash, which occurred earlier today at Lapok Mor village, involved motor vehicle registration UBP 736U, an Isuzu bus belonging to Nile Star Coaches, and SSD 040A/SSD 498C, a Benz Actros trailer.
The bus was being driven by Abugo Mandella Kadin, who is currently in police custody.
According to Michael Kananura, the Public Relations Officer at the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, preliminary findings indicate that the bus, which was en route from Arua, attempted to overtake two vehicles ahead.
In the process, it collided head-on with an oncoming trailer.
“Four passengers died instantly at the scene. Sixteen others sustained injuries and were rushed to Anaka Hospital, while three more later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll to seven,” Kananura said.
Eyewitnesses onboard the bus alleged that the driver had been driving recklessly throughout the journey.
Passengers reportedly raised concerns about his driving, but these were allegedly dismissed by the conductor without any corrective action being taken.
Police said investigations into the crash are ongoing.
