Sewage spill forces Durban South Beach closure

A suspected failure at the Mahatma Gandhi Pump Station has caused raw sewage to flood parts of Durban’s South Beach area, forcing the closure of three beaches.
The contamination has raised concerns about elevated E. coli levels, while reports indicate sewage has flowed directly into the harbour.
There are also reports of paving outside hotels collapsing due to the sewage overflow.
Local councillor Charmaine Sewsunker says the situation has become critical.
“And the sewer is now very visible and the stench is absolutely unbearable.”
Sewsunker says authorities informed residents that the problem was caused by electrical and technical failures at the pump station.
“Look, the authorities have responded by saying that due to an electrical and technical problem experienced at the Mahatma Gandhi pump, the pumps have failed. The sewage blockages in the city will only be resolved once the pump is fixed.”
She says officials have not provided a clear timeline for repairs.
“They haven’t given us a time frame on the press briefing that was conducted at City Hall by senior management in the Sewer Department. They have said it will take about three days to get the spares to repair that pump station.” says Sewsunker.
