Namibian striker Peter Shalulile added another major trophy to his cabinet after becoming the first Namibian player to win the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League title.
The 32-year-old continues to strengthen his status as the most decorated Namibian footballer of all time. The CAF Champions League is a trophy that Mamelodi Sundowns had been chasing for years, and they have finally brought it back to South Africa for the first time since winning their maiden title in 2016, when they defeated Egyptian giants Zamalek SC 3-1 on aggregate in the final.
In 2026, Sundowns ended their continental drought by defeating Moroccan side AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in the final. They won the first leg 1-0 at home in South Africa before drawing the second leg 1-1 away from home to secure the title on their opponents’ ground.
It was Shalulile’s first CAF Champions League gold medal after he collected a silver medal last season when Sundowns lost 2-1 on aggregate to Egyptian side Pyramids FC in the final.
The triumph marked Shalulile’s 14th career trophy as a footballer. He has won titles with Tura Magic FC, the Namibian national team, Highlands Park FC and Mamelodi Sundowns, where he has won the majority of his honours. His achievements include ten trophies with Sundowns, the 2025 Cosafa Cup with Namibia, two trophies with Tura Magic in Namibia and one title with Highlands Park.
Shalulile did not feature in the 2026 CAF Champions League final as he was not included in the matchday squad. His last appearance in the competition came during the final group-stage match against MC Alger in February, when he came on in the 85th minute to replace striker Brayan León before later being ruled out for several months with an injury.
The CAF Champions League remains a competition close to Shalulile’s heart. He finished as the competition’s top goal scorer with six goals during the 2022/23 season, winning the Golden Boot and becoming the first player from the South African PSL to achieve the feat. He also holds the record for the most CAF Champions League goals scored by a PSL player, with a total of 21 goals.
The PSL’s all-time leading goalscorer is currently in the final year of his contract with Mamelodi Sundowns after the club activated a one-year extension option last summer.
