MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Tensions between Somalia’s federal government and Southwest state authorities escalated Tuesday after regional leaders appointed district commissioners in Mogadishu, signaling a deepening standoff over authority and jurisdiction.

The move came in direct response to the federal government’s decision to appoint a new mayor for Wajid, a town in the Bakol region that falls under Southwest state administration. Regional officials view the decision as an encroachment on their constitutional powers.

In a swift countermeasure, Southwest authorities named district commissioners for Abdiaziz, Shibis, Karan and Dharkenley – districts in the capital, Mogadishu. The areas are widely seen as strongholds of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s clan, adding political weight to the appointments.

For Southwest, the signal is clear: if the federal government asserts the right to appoint officials within regional states, regional administrations can make a parallel claim over federal and local governance structures in the capital.

The dispute underscores a broader and increasingly volatile power struggle. Both sides have continued a military buildup, heightening fears that the standoff could tip into open confrontation.

With neither side showing signs of retreat, the crisis threatens to further strain an already fragile political landscape.
