A Jamaican national, who appeared in the Holetown Magistrates’ Court on traffic violations earlier this month, has been fined and deported.
Shavar Lashane Ashley, formerly of No. 124 Husbands Gardens, St James, had pleaded guilty to all of the June 4 offences when he went back before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant last Wednesday for sentencing.
He was fined $1 000 forthwith or 12 months in prison for exceeding the speed limit and was also given a $500 forthwith fine for failing to stop at a red light with six months behind bars as the alternative if he did not pay.
For failing to give his name and address to officers, Ashley was handed a forthwith fine of $500, with an alternative of six months in jail.
For not having a valid driver’s licence, the magistrate fined Ashley $1 000, or 12 months in jail. He was also disqualified from holding a driver’s licence in Barbados for the next 12 months and ordered deported.
His lack of insurance coverage earned him a further $1 000 fine, again with a 12-month sentence as the alternative. Ashley was handed a similar sentence
for driving dangerously.
He was convicted, reprimanded and discharged for failing to comply with a stop sign, failing to stop at the sound of a siren, failure to register the vehicle, using fraudulent number plates and driving without due care and attention.
Prosecutor Constable Cindy Greaves said that police were doing traffic stops in the Prior Park, St. James area when they noticed Ashley speeding and stopped him. While the officers were interviewing him he refused to give his name or address and instead drove off. He was pursued by the police, got into an accident and was arrested.
Ashley, who was represented by attorney at law Sian Lange, left the courtroom accompanied by immigration officials after his fines were paid. (SD)
