Women’s Health Month is an opportunity to spotlight the real experiences behind the brands making space for women’s wellness, confidence, and care. For Jasmine Nelson, founder of Umber by J. Lenay, this mission is deeply personal. What began as her own search for solutions to unwanted hair growth evolved into a skincare brand and support community designed to serve women navigating PCOS, hirsutism, and excessive hair growth with more compassion and practical support.
Built from lived experience and years of research, Umber By J. Lenay reflects Jasmine’s commitment to helping women feel seen, supported, and empowered through products and conversation. Her story is a reminder that women’s health is not only about treatment, but also about confidence, visibility, and access to solutions that meet real needs.

What inspired you to create Umber by J. Lenay?
Jasmine: My personal experience dealing with unwanted hair inspired the brand. I was unhappy with the methods that were available, so I created something that would work for me and for other women facing the same struggle.
How does your brand connect to women’s health?
Jasmine: Umber is connected to women’s health because it speaks directly to conditions like PCOS, hirsutism, and excessive hair growth. I also created a Facebook support group so women can find information, encouragement, and community beyond just the product itself.
What makes your approach different from other beauty brands?
Jasmine: Umber wasn’t built around trends. It was created from real life and years of research. We focus on plant-based, dermatologist-tested products that are rooted in purpose and designed with women of color in mind.
Why was it important for you to create a support community as part of the brand?
Jasmine: I know how isolating this experience can feel. I wanted women to know they are not alone, and that there is a place where they can learn, connect, and feel supported while navigating their own journey.
What would you say to women who are still searching for answers about their hair growth concerns?
Jasmine: I would tell them not to settle for quick fixes or empty promises. Keep searching, keep asking questions, and pay attention to the solutions that actually meet your needs.
What does Women’s Health Month mean to you personally?
Jasmine: It means creating more space for women to talk honestly about what they’re going through. So many women silently deal with things like PCOS and hirsutism, and I want my brand to help bring those conversations into the open.
