DAR ES SALAAAM: THE Police have issued a timely and necessary warning against the growing misuse of social media to encourage criminal activities that threaten public safety, peace and national security. Such warnings should not be taken lightly. When online platforms become tools for incitement, society risks sliding from lawful expression into dangerous lawlessness.
Reports that some individuals are encouraging road blockades, attacks on members of the public, destruction of property and even the burning of schools should alarm every responsible citizen. These are not acts of protest. They are criminal acts with potentially devastating consequences for innocent people, communities and the nation as a whole.
Particularly disturbing are alleged attempts to persuade young people to participate in hooliganism and arson. Parents, guardians and community leaders must remain vigilant. Children and teenagers are often vulnerable to manipulation, peer pressure and reckless online messaging. What may appear to them as excitement, rebellion or activism can quickly turn into criminal conduct carrying lifelong consequences.
The suggestion that schools should be targeted is especially reckless. Schools are not political symbols. They are centres of learning, built through public investment and sacrifice. Every classroom destroyed by fire represents lost opportunities, interrupted education and diminished hopes for future generations. Burning schools does not punish authorities; it punishes students, teachers and communities.
The public must also recognise that violence against security personnel, destruction of public infrastructure and attacks on private property undermine the rule of law and threaten national stability. No legitimate grievance can justify actions that endanger lives or spread fear among ordinary citizens.
At the same time, this troubling trend should prompt deeper reflection. Communities, educators and local leaders must engage young people more actively, identify sources of frustration and address concerns before they are exploited by those promoting disorder. Prevention remains far more effective than reacting after damage has occurred.
Equally, schools themselves should strengthen safety awareness and emergency preparedness wherever possible. Fire prevention measures, rapid response plans and community vigilance can help reduce risks and protect students.
