The Alchemist is proving once again that slowing down simply is not part of his vocabulary.

The one-time AllHipHop producer of the year has unveiled LIQUID FORM, a seven-track EP that further cements his standing as one of Hip-Hop’s most inventive beat architects. The immediate stand out was a track with Kool G Rap, but the short EP features heavyweight appearances from Conway The Machine2 ChainzBoldy James and the man behind the boards.

The Alchemist constructs a sonic landscape that feels both cinematic and even unsettling. The beats drift through shadowy textures and haunting samples before crashing into hard-hitting drums that demand attention. Making streetwise and otherworldly songs is no easy feat.

All of these vocal performances are excellent. Conway delivers his trademark grit, Boldy James slides effortlessly on the beat and 2 Chainz injects Southern charisma. And then there is Kool G Rap. The Corona Queens brings the veteran presence that, yet again, rebukes the notion of agism in Hip-Hop. The production is still the star, despite these pure lyricists.

Only four of the seven tracks feature vocals, but that never feels like a limitation. If anything, the instrumental cuts highlight just how immersive The Alchemist’s music can be. MCs are sure to breathe on these. Al tells stories without words and that is a super power in rap music. The instrumentals invite listeners deeper into the world he has created and yet leaves mystery as well. Many will study ALC as he studied the likes of Havoc and DJ Muggs.

Listening to LIQUID FORM begs the question: Where exactly are these sounds coming from? Al is a kid from Beverly Hills that emits a vibration of a deaf mute prodigy creating in a dungeon. Whatever. At this point, none of that matters. The Alchemist continues to own one of the productive creative spaces in Hip-Hop.

With LIQUID FORM proves great rappers visit his world as he continues to create it.
