By Zoila Palma: The Belize Zoo is welcoming Pedro, whose story began in San Pedro Village, Corozal.
In March 2026, a village resident discovered what he believed was an abandoned domestic kitten while tending to his farm. After bringing the tiny animal home and taking a closer look, he realized it was actually a young margay and contacted the Belize Zoo for assistance.
The Belize Zoo’s Wildlife Officer retrieved the cub, who was found to be in good condition.
The zoo says that since Pedro was so young and had been separated from his mother, it was determined that he would have the best chance of survival being hand-raised by the dedicated animal care team at the Belize Zoo.
The team at the Belize Zoo expressed excitement to continue to watch Pedro grow.
