When one mom found herself in the awkward position of accepting an invitation to her son’s special school assembly while dressed in her grey sweats, she did so reluctantly – and it turned out to be one of the sweetest moments shared with her precious boy.
King William’s Town, South Africa (13 May 2026) – Every now and then, life sends us lessons, whether they’re welcome or not, that remind us that some of the most precious things we have to offer in this world are our time and presence.
Sharing her recent “harsh reminder” was hardworking mom, Mokuhle Mbengo, who penned a post about how life’s unforeseen moments made her realise that taking your children to school isn’t just about affording the fees.
Last week, Mokuhle received a message advising parents that, due to the severe weather and a directive from the Department of Education, her son’s school reunion assembly and all related activities would be cancelled.
However, the following morning, another update was sent: the assembly would go ahead after all, as the rain had stopped and the sun was out.
Although Mokuhle was hesitant, she got her son ready for school as he didn’t want to miss being part of the special reunion assembly.
When they arrived at the school, parents were told they could attend if they wanted to. Yet again, Mokuhle found herself hesitating to accept the invitation as she was dressed in her sweats – hardly what she considered appropriate for the occasion.
“I was wearing my grey tracksuit because the aim was to drop him and leave. I had no choice but to put my pride aside and stay, because I knew not being there would break his heart.”
But before she knew it, Mokuhle’s initial embarrassment melted away the moment she and her son locked eyes in that school hall.
“The way he smiled when he saw me was out of this world. He told me that if I didn’t attend, he was going to cry.”
By the end of the day, one lesson stood out for this mommy. That while most of her days were spent working and ensuring she could afford to send her son to a good school,
“Some things can’t be bought; you just need to be present.”
