The Wheelie Schoolbag Initiative Transforming Hospital Rooms into Classrooms for Sick Children

What started as a clever 16-year-old’s school project has now developed into wheelie schoolbags that convert into desks and chairs, which are bringing classrooms straight to young warriors in Gauteng hospitals, so they can keep up with schoolwork.

Gauteng, South Africa (28 May 2026) – Sick children shouldn’t have to choose between getting better and keeping up with schoolwork.

Thankfully, there are systems in place and innovative changemakers ensuring they don’t have to.

Many people don’t know that several South African hospitals have hospital schools linked to provincial education departments, so children receiving long-term medical care can continue learning during treatment.

But for the most part, these children work on their laps in a hospital bed.

To address this, an initiative identified by Steve Biko Academic Hospital’s Head of Paediatric and Child Health clinical unit, Professor Jeané Cloete, involves handing over portable trolley bags that transform into desks and chairs to eight public hospital schools in Gauteng.

The idea for the study station began with Talita Boodhram, who, as a 16-year-old girl, first did a school project using cat litter boxes and plastic spades to create a prototype.

Today, Talita is the Chief Impact Officer at MiDesk Global and the inventor of the MiDesk: a patented, proudly South African wheelie schoolbag that converts into a desk and chair with a solar light for under-resourced children.

What began as her high school science project as a teen has transformed into a UNESCO-endorsed global social innovation, advancing education outcomes and six of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in alignment with the 2030 Agenda.

Talita’s on-the-ground experience has shaped her into a compelling and credible voice for education equity and youth empowerment.

Her innovation is now enabling children to learn wherever they are, no matter what infrastructure challenges they face.

In public paediatric wards, her work is ensuring young people who are bravely fighting illness, injuries and disease can still keep up with their schoolwork – because there is still a future that awaits them after hospitalisation.
