The 2026 Blue Bulls Primary Schools Mini Rugby Day brought together thousands of young players for a weekend focused on fun, development and community spirit.

Pretoria, South Africa (18 May 2026) – Thousands of young rugby players took over the fields at Midstream Ridge Primary School this past weekend as the 2026 Blue Bulls Primary Schools Mini Rugby Day once again turned into a massive celebration of grassroots rugby.

From excited parents on the sidelines to young players running around with oversized jerseys and big smiles, the festival atmosphere was impossible to miss. And while there were plenty of matches happening throughout the day, the bigger focus remained on giving children the chance to enjoy the game, learn new skills and simply fall in love with rugby.

This year’s event brought together an incredible 4,572 players across 446 teams, with 448 matches played throughout the day.

The festival also marked an important moment for local junior rugby structures, with Esjé Esterhuyse officially leading his first Mini Rugby Day as chairman alongside a newly appointed management team. The event also celebrated the the official rollout of SA Rugby’s T1 rugby system across the country.

Boitumelo Pooe, new mini rugby secretary, said the transition felt natural within the Blue Bulls structures because many of the same development-focused principles have already been part of mini rugby in the region for decades.

“The implementation of T1 rugby has once again confirmed how strong the foundation of mini rugby already is within the Blue Bulls region.”

For Esterhuyse (photographed above), one of the standout moments of the day was simply seeing children enjoying themselves out on the field.

“The day went incredibly well, and it was heartwarming to see that mini rugby was the real winner of the day. Thousands of young players had the opportunity to express themselves, enjoy their love for rugby, and simply be part of something special. To have been able to be part of that opportunity for the youth together with my team makes me incredibly proud.”

Beyond the rugby itself, the day once again highlighted how strongly sport continues to bring communities together. Parents, teachers, coaches and supporters all played their part in creating an atmosphere filled with excitement, encouragement and sportsmanship from start to finish.
