PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Thursday, held talks with visiting St. Lucia Prime Minister, Phillip J Pierre, reaffirming “the strong and enduring relationship between our two sister nations, built on shared history, mutual respect and a common vision for regional progress”.

Both leaders posted on their respective social media pages a similar statement indicating that the talks had taken place at the Diplomatic Center, as Pierre paid a courtesy call on Persad-Bissessar.

“We engaged in productive dialogue on deepening cooperation across key areas of mutual interest, including energy, trade, tourism, health, culture, and ICT development. These sectors remain critical to advancing sustainable growth and improving the quality of life for our people.

“We also exchanged views on the opportunities for progress within CARICOM, as we continue to strengthen regional integration and collective resilience in an increasingly complex global environment.”

Pierre, who takes over the chairmanship of the 15-member regional integration grouping in July, said: “I am encouraged by the spirit of collaboration that defined our engagement, and we concluded with a shared commitment to further deepen cooperation between St Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago for the benefit of our citizens and the wider Caribbean region”.

Earlier, the ruling United National Congress (UNC) in a statement posted on its Facebook page said that Pierre had spoken at the funeral of party stalwart Don Sylvester.

“We were also honored by the presence of St. Lucian Prime Minister, Hon Philip J. Pierre, who joined in paying tribute to his life and legacy,” the ruling party said, describing Sylvester as being “more than a political figure, he was a grassroots soldier, a steadfast supporter, and a man whose commitment never wavered”.
