By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): UNHCR and UNICEF are working with Belizean social workers and child protection professionals to strengthen the country’s response to vulnerable children, including those who have been forcibly displaced.
A Best Interest Procedure Training is bringing together frontline professionals from across Belize to improve how decisions are made in cases involving children who may be facing violence, abuse, neglect, exploitation, family separation or displacement.
The Best Interest Procedure is designed to keep the safety, rights, well being and development of children at the center of every decision.
Through case studies, practical exercises and interactive sessions, participants are building skills to assess risks, develop protection responses and identify solutions based on the individual needs of each child.
The training forms part of ongoing collaboration between UNHCR, UNICEF and the Department of Human Services under the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs.
Mariya Voloshkevich, Officer in Charge for UNHCR in Belize, said the training is an important investment in the country’s child protection system and will help frontline professionals provide more consistent and effective support.
UNICEF Belize Representative Sajid Ali stressed that every child has the right to protection and care regardless of their circumstances.
Director of the Department of Human Services Shawn Vargas also highlighted the importance of family unity, saying separation should never be treated as the first or easiest response and must only be considered when it is lawful, necessary and proportionate.
The agencies say they will continue working with national partners to improve child protection systems and advance the rights and well being of children across Belize.
