Urgent warning for SASSA beneficiaries using Gold Cards

Still using a SASSA Gold Card? You’ll need to act soon to keep receiving your grant without interruption. Here's what to do.

Urgent warning for SASSA beneficiaries using Gold Cards

If you’re still using a SASSA Gold Card to receive your grant, there’s an important change you need to know about.

Postbank has confirmed that all gold cards will be replaced with new Postbank Black Cards. The rollout officially starts on 29 April 2026, and anyone still using a Gold Card has until 31 August 2026 to make the switch.

After that deadline, the old cards will stop working completely, which means affected beneficiaries will no longer be able to access their grant payments.

SASSA Gold Cards are being phased out

This replacement is part of a broader upgrade that has been underway since 2024, aimed at improving security and making the system more reliable for millions of South Africans who rely on social grants each month.

If you have already switched to a Postbank Black Card, you don’t need to do anything. Your card will continue to work as normal and still offers benefits like free monthly statements, limited free withdrawals, and added protection against fraud.

But if you are still using a Gold Card, you need to act before the deadline. Waiting too long could result in your grant payments being interrupted.

Where and how to get your new card

According to Postbank, beneficiaries can collect their new Black Cards for free at selected retail stores, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar.

You don’t need to fill in any forms. Simply bring your valid South African ID or a temporary ID. You can collect your card in any province, even if your grant was approved somewhere else.

Once you receive your Black Card, it will work immediately. Any money that was in your Gold Card account will automatically be available on the new card, and there’s no need to visit a SASSA office.

Postbank has also warned beneficiaries to be careful of fraudsters. The official Black Card will clearly have “Postbank” printed on the front.

If anyone asks you to pay for the card or fill in forms to make it work, that is a warning sign. The process is completely free and simple.
