The West Indies Under-19 cricket team suffered a heavy 138-run defeat against Afghanistan in their second fixture at the ICC Under-19 Boys World Cup in Namibia on Sunday, January 18.

After being asked to bowl first, the Windies were put under pressure early as Afghan openers Khalid Ahmadzai and Osman Sadat built an 86-run partnership. Vitel Lawes eventually broke the stand, but another strong 77-run partnership between captain Mehboob Taskin and Sadat propelled Afghanistan to 262-6 in their allotted 50 overs. Jakeem Pollard and Lawes were the standout bowlers for the West Indies, claiming three wickets apiece.

Afghanistan’s bowlers then wreaked havoc in the powerplay, removing three West Indian wickets within the first five overs. Jewel Andrew was the lone bright spot for the Caribbean side, scoring a resilient half-century against a relentless Afghan attack. However, the West Indies were ultimately bowled out for just 124.
