The AmeriCup 3×3 journey is over for Saint Lucia, after they lost twice on the opening day on Thursday, November 27, in Leon, Mexico. The Saint Lucians went down to Jamaica and Guyana and were unable to advance to the main draw. Jamaica defeated Guyana to win Qualifying Group A.
In the opening match, Saint Lucia lost 21-7. Sidney Didier scored the opening basket, but the Jamaicans went on a 12-0 run. A one-pointer from Troy Louison led to a 4-0 run for Saint Lucia, but they were outscored 8-3 the rest of the way. Jamaica missed six of their 11 free throws, whilst Saint Lucia went to the line just twice, missing both. Didier was Saint Lucia’s leading scorer with three points.
It was a much better show in the second qualifying game, as Guyana only prevailed 17-15 in overtime. Sharmoir Baptiste gave Saint Lucia a 4-3 lead, and the team was up by three after 3:39. Guyana’s Travis Belgrave tied it at 7-7, but Louison and Didier helped get the lead back to three at 11-8. The contest was knotted up again at 12-12, and a Louison two-pointer at the buzzer left it 15-15 at the end of regulation, only for Belgrave to net a two-pointer for the win.
Belgrave led all scorers with 10 points. For Saint Lucia, Didier and Louison had five each, Baptiste three and Clayton William two. Neither team was able to convert from the line. Guyana missed four free throws, and Saint Lucia two.
Jamaica outlasted Guyana 19-14 to move on from the group phase. Also advancing were Trinidad & Tobago, who beat Saint Kitts & Nevis 21-7 and Uruguay 21-18,
