ZimFest founder Hilton Mendelsohn dies

ZimFest founder and writer Hilton Mendelsohn has died at the age of 55.

His elder brother Ivan Mendelsohn confirmed his death to NewZimbabwe.com, saying he succumbed to a short illness in Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Mendelsohn, who relocated to the United Kingdom at the turn of the century, was a prominent figure in Zimbabwean diaspora community.

He was a founding member of ZimFest in 2001, an annual arts festival celebrating Zimbabwean culture, which started as a charitable organisation, WEZIMBABWE. Through the platforms, Mendelsohn played a key role in promoting the arts and advocating for positive change in Zimbabwe.

He is survived by his fiancée, son, three sisters, a brother and mother.

Tributes have begun pouring in, with many remembering him as a passionate advocate for his country.

Business partner and friend Ivan Mudzudzu said he “was a pillar of the Zimbabwean community and will be deeply missed.

“He firmly believed in a Zimbabwe of all races and ZimFest was based on bringing all Zimbabweans together”.

His close friend Mike Tashaya described Mendelsohn as “a true gem” who was deeply committed to Zimbabwe.

“His unwavering dedication to Zimbabwe was a constant source of inspiration, and through our work with WEZIMBABWE and Zimfest platforms he founded, I saw the depth of his commitment to creating positive change in our country. While his passing is a tremendous loss, I am also filled with a deep sense of gratitude for having known such an exceptional individual. His legacy will continue to inspire me, and I am honoured to have had him as a friend and collaborator to my own journey,” Tashaya said.
