Alex Torrão is balancing business, fatherhood and international rally racing as he works towards qualifying for one of the toughest motorsport events in the world.
Johannesburg, South Africa (13 May 2026) – By the time most people are winding down after work, Johannesburg dad Alex Torrão is usually squeezing in another training session, plotting another rally route, or preparing for the next step towards one of motorsport’s toughest events: the Dakar Rally.
The entrepreneur and father of three is chasing a dream years in the making through his #DAD2DAKAR campaign, balancing family life, business meetings and international rally preparation all at once.
But for Alex, this journey is about far more than racing.
“It’s not about winning Dakar. It’s about getting to the start line knowing I never gave up on something I’ve dreamed about since I was young.”
Raised between South Africa, Portugal and Macau, Alex’s love for motorcycles started early while riding through rural Portugal. Like many childhood dreams, Dakar could easily have become something he spoke about in the past tense. Instead, he decided to seriously pursue it later in life while still juggling the realities of fatherhood and work.
One moment, he is doing school runs and spending time with his daughters, the next, he is navigating demanding terrain during rally events in Botswana or Morocco.
His preparation has already included major races such as the FIM South African Safari Rally, the Giants Adventure Rally Botswana and the Fenek Rally Morocco, all important stepping stones as he works towards qualifying for Dakar.
And things are only getting busier. His 2026 schedule stretches even further, with races planned in Argentina, Morocco and the Africa Eco Race as part of a carefully mapped-out two-year journey towards securing a Dakar entry.
While Dakar is one of the world’s biggest motorsport spectacles, broadcast globally to millions of viewers, Alex says the meaning behind the challenge is deeply personal.
For him, it’s about ambition and showing his children that life does not suddenly stop once adulthood takes over.
In many ways, #DAD2DAKAR has become bigger than motorcycles and rally racing. It is also about showing that family responsibilities and personal goals do not have to cancel each other out.
And as his Dakar journey continues to pick up momentum, Alex is proving that sometimes the boldest thing a person can do is simply decide to keep going after the dream they never quite let go of.
