*BAFTA has detailed a series of changes and acknowledgments following the N-word controversy that disrupted its 2026 film awards, pointing to internal shortcomings while rejecting claims of systemic bias. The organization said an independent review found gaps in its processes but no evidence of intentional wrongdoing, Variety reports.

Central to BAFTA’s response was an admission that its internal systems were not equipped for the demands of a live broadcast environment. The review highlighted “a number of structural weaknesses in BAFTA’s planning, escalation procedures and crisis coordination arrangements,” which limited how effectively the situation was handled as it unfolded.

The organization conceded that it had fallen short in preparing for such a moment. “We did not adequately anticipate or fully prepare for the impact of such an incident in a live event environment and as a result our duty of care to everyone at the ceremony and watching at home fell short,” BAFTA said.

The incident involved John Davidson, a Tourette syndrome advocate linked to the film “I Swear,” who involuntarily shouted a racial slur during a live segment with presenters Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo. The disruption drew widespread backlash and shifted attention away from the event itself.

In its response, BAFTA emphasized that the findings did not support claims of “malicious intent” or “institutional racism,” instead attributing the outcome to systems that had not kept pace with its diversity goals. The organization also issued a broad apology, stating it “apologizes unreservedly” to both the Black community and the disability community, as well as guests and viewers.

Reflecting on the impact, BAFTA said, “What was supposed to be a moment of celebration was diminished and overshadowed,” adding that it had contacted those directly affected to express regret.

Steps are already underway to address the issues identified in the review. BAFTA said it is strengthening internal communication and escalation procedures, expanding how inclusion is planned across events, and addressing knowledge gaps that may hinder its diversity commitments.

The review further pointed to the challenges of delivering inclusive live events, noting the importance of balancing accessibility with the experience of all participants. BAFTA maintained that stronger planning and clearer structures will be key to preventing similar incidents in the future.
