By Zoila Palma: The Belize Police Department (BPD) recently hosted 5 sessions of Sexual Consent Workshop aimed at strengthening participants’ understanding of consent, personal boundaries, respectful communication, and professional conduct.
The BPD said that the sessions provided valuable knowledge that promotes safer workplaces, healthier relationships, and stronger community engagement.
The workshop was facilitated by Michelle Major, who holds a Master’s degree in Psychology and Human Services, with concentrations in Addictions and Family Systems. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Anthropology.
Participants focused on what constitutes consent, when can consent be given, forced consent, three pillars of consent: Communication, Respect, and Consent and defining, recognizing, and respecting personal boundaries.
The session also emphasized that consent must be communicated clearly, freely, and be fully understood by everyone involved.
The workshop challenged participants to reflect on everyday situations by asking: “What have you given consent for, and was that consent clearly communicated and understood?”
The Belize Police Department says that it remains committed to promoting professionalism, mutual respect, and creating a culture where every individual’s rights, dignity, and autonomy are respected.
