Belize’s CEO’s join students for tree-planting as part of Ministry of Sustainable Development’s “Greening Belize” initiative

By Zoila Palma:  Chief Executive Officers from across the Government of Belize stepped away from their offices on June 11 to join students of Our Lady of Fatima RC School in Roaring Creek Village for a tree-planting activity aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and climate resilience.

The event forms part of the Greening Belize Initiative, the government’s ambitious program to plant one million trees across the country by 2035.

Students and members of the CEO Caucus worked together to plant trees throughout the school grounds, contributing to the national reforestation effort.

Similar activities is expected to be carried out in schools across every district in the coming days as part of a campaign to encourage greater public participation in the initiative and inspire Belizeans to support environmental restoration efforts.

The Greening Belize Initiative was officially launched in January 2026 by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management. Supported by the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Development Program under the GEF6 Project, the program focuses on restoring wildfire-affected and degraded landscapes while promoting sustainable land management throughout Belize.

The initiative is being led by the Belize Forest Department and aligns with the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution, National Landscape Restoration Strategy and international commitments such as the Bonn Challenge.

The program is intended to strengthen climate resilience, restore degraded lands and deliver long-term environmental and economic benefits for communities across Belize.
