Bill Cosby was once one of the wealthiest entertainers on the planet, landing on the Forbes 400 after his net worth swelled to an estimated $300 million by the early 1990s. Much of that wealth traced back to his signature role as Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show, the NBC sitcom that ran from 1984 to 1992 and followed the daily lives of the Huxtables, an upper-middle-class Black family in a Brooklyn brownstone. The show turned Cosby into a ratings juggernaut and, by extension, one of the highest earners in America: in 1987 alone he reportedly pulled in more than $100 million, nearly five times what Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca made that year, according to Forbes.

The numbers behind that success were staggering for their era. The Cosby Show averaged 63 million viewers a week at its peak, a figure almost unthinkable today — Yellowstone, the most-watched show of 2022, drew roughly 13 million. Cosby also took a cut of syndication profits from the series and its spinoff, A Different World; at its height the show commanded $4 million an episode in syndication, and reruns brought in more than $1.5 billion over two decades.

That fame made him a go-to pitchman, too. His Jell-O campaigns alone reportedly pushed the brand’s sales up by nearly $100 million in their first year, and he lent his image to Coca-Cola and Kraft Foods as well. Cosby built a stand-up career spanning five decades that earned him nine Grammy Awards, and as recently as 2013–2014, Forbes estimated his “Far From Finished” tour brought in at least $7 million.
