Birmingham’s Safe Summer Series Returns With Live Music, a Message to Honor Fathers

The city of Birmingham is bringing the community together once again with the kickoff of the annual Safe Summer Series concerts.

Families gathered at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens this Father’s Day weekend to enjoy free live music, local food trucks and beautiful green spaces.

Birmingham City Council President Wardine Alexander shared that the concert series has been running for six years. It began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to give families a safe outdoor space to gather and connect.

“As a council, we want our families to get out, enjoy our green spaces,” Alexander said.

Safe Summer Series was launched to create a “safe space” for neighbors to gather from Covid-19 and violence, and simply have a good time through music.

An estimated 50,000 were in attendance throughout the inaugural 2021 and 2022 season. The Safe Summer Series team partnered with local health organizations to offer Covid-19 vaccinations and information about various health topics. Local food trucks and small businesses assisted with all concerts, with an estimated 75 vendors. Providing a free concert left residents with more money to put back into Birmingham’s economy.

Though society is now in a post-Covid life, the magic of Safe Summer Series has been kept alive, bringing thousands together over the love of music with great food in a safe environment.

The 2026 kickoff event featured a lineup of both local and national artists.

Even with the possibility of rain, the weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the crowd.

Alexander emphasized that the weekend’s event was a perfect opportunity to celebrate the holiday.

“This is a great time for our families to get out and honor their fathers, whether they’re with us now or not,” Alexander said. “I just want to say happy Father’s Day to all the fathers here in the city of Birmingham.”

If you missed the kickoff, the fun isn’t over yet. The free Safe Summer Series will feature more concerts throughout July and August, with the final event wrapping up the series in September.
