Botswana faces harder times
Botswana is rapidly running out of the financial cushion that for decades shielded it from economic shocks, with the World Bank warning that diamond revenues which once paid more than two years of government wages are now sufficient to cover only four months.
In its latest Botswana Economic Update titled “Seizing the Moment: How Botswana Can Turn Crisis into Opportunity,” the World Bank paints one of the starkest assessments yet of the country’s deteriorating fiscal position, warning that years of declining diamond revenues, widening budget deficits and delayed reforms have left government facing increasingly difficult choices.
