Comment on Petition launched to save Brixton’s community-focused International House from redevelopment by Frankly

In reply to Brixtonite. The same website (L&Q) says “The government introduced affordable rents to allow social housing providers, like us, to charge up to 80% of the local market rent for the homes we let.” 80% of the local market rent is NOT affordable!! Average rent in Brixton for a 2-bed flat is £2,382. 80% = £1,904 (£22,867 p.a.). But London Living Wage = £28,860 per year Therefore what L&Q is calling “affordable rent” would take 80% of the London Living Wage and leave £6,000 p.a. for everything else. This is *RUBBISH*. Websites can write *RUBBISH*. Repeating what this website claims is *RUBBISH* Social rents are not government-subsidised. Council housing is administered through an account that is separate from all other local authority spending, the Housing Revenue Account, which has to remain solvent, and is covered by rental income.
