Court Grants Sowore Bail, Imposes ₦200 Million Surety Conditions

The Federal High Court in Abuja has restored the bail of Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), after an earlier revocation, while imposing fresh and stringent bail conditions.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore to surrender his international passport and provide two sureties in the sum of ₦200 million each.

Sowore’s bail had been revoked on June 16, 2026, following his failure to appear in court for his scheduled trial. The court subsequently issued a bench warrant for his arrest and ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The AAC presidential candidate is facing trial over allegations related to cybercrime and defamatory statements stemming from social media posts in which he allegedly referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a criminal. Sowore has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Speaking after the proceedings, Sowore described the fresh bail conditions as excessive and a violation of his fundamental human rights. He argued that the requirements placed on him were unnecessarily restrictive and raised concerns about fairness in the judicial process.

Also reacting, Celab Joshua, a member of the AAC and supporter of Sowore, criticized the court’s decision, stating that the treatment meted out to the politician fell short of acceptable judicial standards.

The court further ruled that one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler, while the second must be the owner of landed property within Abuja.

The matter was adjourned for continuation of trial, as Sowore’s legal team and supporters continue to challenge the conditions attached to his bail.
