Reports indicate that dancer and actress Carmen de Lavallade has died. Her son confirmed she passed away on Monday, stating that de Lavallade died in Englewood, N.J., following an illness. She was 94.
De Lavallade was best known for her work with the renowned dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey and was a pioneering figure in American modern dance. She was the wife of the late actor, dancer, musician, director, choreographer, and artist Geoffrey Holder. The couple were married for nearly 60 years until Holder’s death in 2014.
In a statement, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater said de Lavallade’s work inspired generations of choreographers throughout the 20th century.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of the incomparable Carmen de Lavallade, 94—actor, dancer, choreographer, mother, and a true luminary of American dance and theater,” the statement read. “We honor and give thanks for her extraordinary life, boundless artistry, and the generations she shaped through her work, her wisdom, and her presence.”
