Erin Jackson didn’t grow up anywhere near an ice rink. Growing up in Ocala, Florida, where heat and humidity rule and no winter sports programs exist, Jackson found her way to the top of one of the least diverse sports in the world for Black women and girls—speed skating. And she’s not just competing there. She’s crushing it.

Jackson first fell in love with roller skating long before she ever touched the ice. She started inline at 10, and the rest is history. Forty‑seven national titles and 15 world championship medals later, she defended her gold at this year’s Winter Olympics on Feb 15. A fitting way to close out Black History Month.

In 2016–2017, she moved to ice. Four months of serious ice training, Jackson qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics. She became the first Black American woman ever on the U.S. Olympic speed skating team. She finished 24th in PyeongChang. But nobody realized yet what was coming.

Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

She carved her name into history as the first Black woman from any country to win an individual Winter Olympic gold in speed skating, and the first American woman to do it since 1994.

Known for her strong, controlled hips on the ice, the kind of power that turns each stride into a glide that feels almost unreal. She moves with poise, perseverance, and calm under pressure.
