High school students’ views on Trump and politics

“We need a new President,” said Jaydin Johnson. “I don’t like him. His policies on immigration and ICE aren’t very beneficial to the greater good for America.”

A group of Houston-area high school graduates and college-bound students expressed mixed but largely critical views on President Donald Trump’s presidency and its impact on youth political engagement. While most said social media has made them more aware of political issues, many admitted they remain only moderately involved, citing a lack of influence or uncertainty about how to make a difference. Several criticized Trump’s leadership style and policies on immigration, women’s rights, and the economy, while others said his presidency has made young people pay closer attention to government. Many agreed that schools should do more to educate students about politics and civic engagement.
