The Government of India has donated 1 000 metric tonnes (MT) of rice to Malawi to support families affected by food insecurity following climate-related disasters that have hit the country in recent months.

India handed over the donation yesterday to the Government of Malawi through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) at the National Food Reserve Agency in Kanengo, Lilongwe.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation George Chaponda, who received the package on behalf of the Malawi Government, described the assistance as a symbol of the strong relationship between Malawi and India.

“The support we are receiving today therefore represents not only material assistance, but also a strong message of solidarity and friendship between Malawi and India,” he said.

Chaponda said the donation comes at a time the country continues to face serious food insecurity due to erratic rainfall patterns and floods experienced since late 2025.

He said over four million people were projected to be affected by hunger which prompted President Peter Mutharika to declare a State of Disaster and appeal for international assistance.

Indian High Commissioner Amararam Gujar said the donation reflected India’s continued commitment to supporting Malawi during difficult times.

“This consignment of 1 000 metric tonnes of rice represents India’s commitment to standing with the people of Malawi during difficult times and contributing towards food security and resilience,” he said.

He said India and Malawi share long-standing relations dating back to colonial times, adding that the partnership has continued to grow in sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare and trade.

The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Mvac) last year projected that four million people were at risk of hunger in the 2025/26 consumption period, representing 22 percent of the country’s projected population of 20 million. The number represented an increase from 2.9 million people authorities estimated would face hunger between May and September 2025.
