Detective chief inspector Antonius Gabriel has detailed an account of the scene where the late prosecutor Justine Shiweda was attacked.
Gabriel told the court on Thursday that Shiweda’s clothes burnt on her body shortly after a corrosive substance was allegedly thrown on her during the assault.
Gabriel, who was among the first police officers to arrive at the scene, testified during the bail hearing of accused person Petrus Shikwaya, who the state alleges financed the purchase of the acid used in the attack.
Gabriel told the court he received news of the shooting while at his office at Oshakati before travelling to Onguta at Ondangwa, where Shiweda’s home is located.
“Justine was shot at 07h10 on 17 October 2025. It was a Friday,” Gabriel said, adding that upon arrival he was briefed by a senior officer already at the scene.
He described a red car parked partially inside the garage, with the rear portion outside.
The driver’s window had been smashed and a cellphone was found on the ground beside the vehicle.
Gabriel said he was later informed that the phone belonged to Shiweda.
Inside the vehicle, he observed a reddish foam on the front seats, which he said emitted a strong smell.
He told the court the passenger window was wide open and a duvet on the front passenger seat was still smouldering when police arrived.
Gabriel said investigators also found a spent cartridge inside the car.
According to his testimony, Shiweda was attacked while reversing her vehicle from the garage as she prepared to go to work and drop off her two children at school.
He said two men approached the vehicle, one of whom was carrying a plastic container.
“One poured her acid and the other shot at her seven times,” he said.
He added that Shiweda sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and severe burns to her arms and legs.
She was transported to an Ondangwa hospital with a bullet still lodged in her thigh, which was only removed during a post-mortem examination due to its position, he said.
Shiweda died due to her injuries injuries on 7 February this year.
