Mayor Mamdani Hosts Ethnic and Community Media Roundtable on Pre-K And 3-K Enrollment

By Vernon Verdree Newly inaugurated  New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani held his first meeting with Ethnic and Community media on the important issue of childcare, Pre-K and 3-K enrollment. In the more than 45 minute sit-down, the Mayor and his staff (Mayor’s Office for Childcare, Deputy Chancellor for Early Childhood, Chief of Student Enrollment at NYC Public Schools) commented on the overall process and commitment to universal access for all. Along with stating the importance of the program and its positive effects on the well being of the children enrolled(and the parents as well) with many participants coming from minority and immigrant communities, the Mayor emphasized that the program is for all New Yorkers and encouraged families to apply before the February 27th deadline. The Mayor also acknowledged the importance of ethnic and community media in helping to get the word out to the community. In a lively Q&A session with the journalists present, the consensus was about the importance of community engagement and outreach. Points were made regarding addressing issues of language barriers and fear/lack of trust with government, relating to the presence of ICE (Dept of Homeland Security) in sanctuary cities. Mayor Mamdani again stated his defense of all New Yorkers from that form of aggression. The Mayor and his staff spoke of ongoing efforts of working with the community on the issue of affordable quality childcare, and their determination to see it fulfilled, working with partners in ethnic and community media. The Black Star News welcomes the opportunity to work with the new mayoral administration on this issue and many more as we fulfill our mission of serving the people.
