Meet the Candidates: TUSC invoke Cressingham Gardens and “Housing, Housing, Housing” to banish Labour from Lambeth

The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition is fielding nine candidates across eight Lambeth wards on 7 May, framing two decades of abject Labour failure on council housing – from Cressingham Gardens to Homes for Lambeth – as grounds to end 20 years of Labour austerity.

The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition has been fighting Lambeth Labour’s cuts for over a decade and first featured in Brixton Buzz at the February 2015 protest to Save Cressingham Gardens. TUSC has since fought to save the borough’s libraries and Central Hill estate.

Now, with one of the worst housing records in the UK – and £59.3 million of public money lost by Claire Holland’s administration through the disastrous Homes for Lambeth, which delivered just four homes.

TUSC spoke to Brixton Buzz about housing, nurseries and more. First up is election agent Steve Nally, standing against Holland on her own patch:

Steve Nally, Oval ward

Lambeth Labour’s managed decline of the borough continues at pace, even under a ‘Labour’ government. An endless diet of cuts to services and failure to provide the council homes required.

TUSC believes that we need socialist councillors who would seriously fight for the housing and services that so many want in Lambeth.

We would also work with councillors who commit to vote for no more cuts in jobs and services and instead put forward a People’s Budget. A budget drawn up by the local trade unions and community.

TUSC councillors would campaign for a budget that prioritises decent and genuinely affordable council housing for all.

Theo Sharieff, Brixton North ward

I believe that all young people in Lambeth deserve a decent future. This begins with ending all threats to close much-needed nurseries. TUSC would fully restore Lambeth’s youth services that have been cut to the bone.

We need properly funded and free arts, sports and cultural facilities for young people. We are constantly told by Labour councillors that the money isn’t there to build council housing, while seeing luxury blocks and flats being built all around us.

A Socialist council would reject this approach and fight for the resources the borough desperately needs and deserves. Not be happy with the crumbs from the property developer’s feast that is engulfing us.

Marco Tesei, Myatt’s Fields ward

I am standing under the TUSC banner because I believe working class people in Lambeth need a genuine anti-austerity alternative – representatives who will fight for council housing and proper repairs, fight against any further cuts to jobs and services, oppose privatisation and demand full funding from central government instead.

This election campaign is a step towards building a new workers’ party that puts people before profit.
